Boy the Sleeping Bull

sleeping bull clipartThis is another of the heart-warming stories of animal rescue that we hear about every couple of weeks or so. Such stories help offset the horrific instances of animal cruelty and torture which we also hear about every couple of weeks. While the horrors are so psyche-damaging that I don’t want to weigh the blog down with them, the rescues are just the right thing to bring light into any gloomy day.

It seems that Boy fell into a well which the property owners didn’t know was there. As I write this, rescue efforts have been underway for hours, first by Bull’s family-owners and then by an agency using a backhoe to dig out a walking path. The path is now available, but Boy’s having none of it. According to the news vigil, in fact, he’s been sleeping for quite a while.

What really strikes me about this story is the expensive tradition of airing such stories on television. With all the cruelty and extreme violence that characterizes today’s world, one can’t help but wonder why this minuscule incident is so important. Is it reassurance that we, those who don’t engage in such debauchery, are worthy and well-intentioned? To suggest that caring for the least able among you (see scripture) is the real nature of the world despite appearances to the contrary?
