It’s not Easy to Earn 42-Minute Ovations

There have been other ovations as long, but one reason this one deserves signaling out is that  the performer, Leontyne Price, was only 34 years old at the time,

It was 1961 and Price was portraying Leonora in Il Trovatore with the Metropolitan Opera. That’s a huge achievement in so young a life.

Price, was born in 1927 in Laurel, Mississippi, in one of the nation’s most racist eras and regions. Arguably, she would not have gotten that kind of recognition in her home state at the time.
